Selecting the right pump for slurries is critical to get the most bang for your buck. Basic pump components, such as the impeller size and design, material of construction, and discharge configurations must be considered to ensure the pump will hold up against the wear caused by an abrasive slurry. Slurry pumps are generally larger in size when compared to low-viscosity liquid pumps and usually require more horsepower to operate because they're less efficient. Is the discharge configuration suitable for abrasive slurries?

Oil seals are used in a great many machines.

Vulcanizates of several fluoroelastomers, listed in Table 14.1, were exposed to a standard 5W-30 engine oil, ASTM Service Fluid 105, for up to 6 weeks at 150°C (302°F).⁵ The oil was changed weekly, but was not aerated. Retained elongation was measured after exposure for 1, 2, 3, and 6 weeks; data are shown in Fig. 14.3. The results indicate that bisphenol-cured FKM-A500 VDF/HFP copolymer, FKM-B600 VDF/HFP/TFE terpolymer, and peroxide-cured FEPM-7456 TFE/P/VDF terpolymer lost most of their original elongation over the course of the test exposure, indicating considerable additional cross-linking occurred by reaction with amine- and phenol-containing oil additives. The other fluoroelastomers showed better retention of elongation, being much less susceptible to additional crosslinking. Note that FEPM-7456 contains a high level of VDF (about 30%), while FEPM-7506 contains a relatively low VDF level (10–15%) to serve as cure site for bisphenol curing. The other FEPM types contain no VDF.

Many – too numerous to list, covering a vast range of designs, sizes, and materials suitable for a never-ending range of applications. Some designs conform to International Standards such as BS1399 and DIN 3760 for metric sizes and seal types, but the majority have been manufactured to suit particular applications – hence the enormous selection available. Oil seals in any size, material or quantity

Conventional oil seals are the traditional seals, which can be recognised by a spring on the inside. These oil seals are made of a metal housing that contains a rubber seal. This part is often made of elastomer and comes into contact with the surface of the rotating shaft.

Out-gassing

Lubricants applied between moving and stationary elements of mechanical equipment help to prevent damage. But when the equipment are under high pressure, the lubricants tend to escape, hence the need for oil seals to prevent the clashing of dry parts. Practically all mechanical equipment, including car engines, assembly machines, and PTFE machined parts use these oil seals to prevent harmful interaction that can result in damaged parts.
